Living with pain is exhausting. Even the process of learning how to manage it can be tiresome. Here are my must-haves.

During my journey, I spent a lot of time researching the best tools for my pain. I’ve definitely wasted money along the way (trial and error), but I did find some amazing tools to manage my hip and back pain effectively. Below you’ll find my top five recommendations for anyone with herniated discs and/or hip issues.

  1. Back Heating Pad: When dealing with long-term back issues, the pain often expands to other areas of the back. This heating pad is different than your standard heating pad because it targets all areas of the back, including the shoulders and lower neck. Another perk? Most heating pads require you to lay down or lean back – not this one. It fastens in place through a magnetic clasp in the front and a belt around the waist, so you can sit up to watch TV or play a card game without compromising the quality of relief.
  2. Magic Gel Ice-Wrap: One of my first purchases for my back pain! This Velcro wrap is both discreet and strong. It’s perfect to use at your desk or in the car on a long road trip. My one critique is that the ice pack itself doesn’t stay cold for long. I’ve started adding in my own ice packs (crushed ice in a plastic bag).
  3. Massage GunIf I was only able to have one item on this list, this would be it. The Hypervolt has a few different levels of intensity and it’s relatively light-weight. Before my total hip replacements (THR’s), I used this to manage back pain and hip pain. After my THR’s, I started using this to stimulate the nerves in my feet and thighs, to help with the tendinitis pain, and to break up some of my scar tissue. This one is pricey but there are a ton of other options to explore.
  4. TENS Unit: These are amazing! I have a few different kinds of TENS units but this one is probably my favorite because of the ability to select from a variety of intensities and modes. It’s kind of weird to use at first so take it slow and read the directions. Don’t touch the pads with your fingers when it’s on – it’s a lesson you’ll only need to learn once. 
  5. Orthopedic Support Wedge Pillow Comfort System: When I was experiencing the excruciating back and hip pain, this was the BEST. The sleeper wedge supported my back and the leg wedge alleviated the pressure at my hips. Everything is adjustable so you can adapt it to your needs. This is another expensive item but if you can’t sleep due to back and hip pain, this is worth it. It significantly helps with quality of sleep.
    • P.S. A cheaper option (and great for side-sleepers) is a pregnancy pillow.

If I could go back in time and have all of these items when my journey started, I would’ve been much more comfortable along the way. As always, check with your doctor about any pain management ideas.
